Like many chiropractors, I chose chiropractic for my profession because I was once helped by a chiropractor. When I was a teenager, about 15, I suffered greatly from seasonal allergies. Spring and Fall were especially difficult times. I first sought relief from over the counter decongestants and antihistamines. The only ones that gave me any temporary relief at all also had the side effect of making me tired all day. Which, in turn, disturbed my sleep.
My parents then took me to our family medical doctor, who, of course, treated me with more powerful medicine. When that also failed, I went to a medical specialist who gave me different medicine which failed again. Finally, out of desperation after about 2 years of suffering, my parents took me to their chiropractor because “some-times it’s good for other things than just back pain” (One of my earliest memories is that of my dad practically crawling into the chiropractic office and walking out straight a short time later.) This was a totally different experience for me than what I was used to. Treated only with adjustments, I improved immediately. As I walked out of the office my sinuses “opened-up” and I could smell “spring time.” I realized then that I hadn’t been able to smell anything for over a year. In just 3 visits I was 90% better and on that 3rd visit I asked Dr. Smith how to become a chiropractor – as I wanted to help people through chiropractic care like I had been helped.
In addition to successfully treating thousands of patients over the years, I have had the pleasure of witnessing chiropractic care benefit my own family, my wife’s back pain during her pregnancies, treating my daughter’s many injuries through her years of gymnastics, and training my son to be a national record holder in power lifting. It’s really neat to have your kids come up to you and ask, “Dad, would you adjust me?”
